Short summary: made my long-delayed return to Shunji after almost half a year (dined with The Offalo, who helped with some of the dish descriptions below), and it has only gotten better. Shunji-san really spoiled us during this dinner (we never had to say a word – he just started fattening us up once we were seated and ready), serving a total of 24 courses (including 11 pieces of nigiri) – basically combining the regular omakase and the sushi special. The restaurant was fairly packed, as I’m sure more people are checking out the place after J. Gold’s review and mention in his Top Picks of 2012. But make sure you go because of Shunji-san’s refined and sophisticated (and more importantly, just plain delicious) Japanese cooking, as well as the now-amazing sushi selection. The chalkboard of “Today’s Special” was full of fishes I’ve rarely/never seen.

A couple of changes since last time: the regular “omakase” as noted above and in previous visits is now named “Japanese Style Tasting Menu” (more appropriate name actually), and it’s now $100 (I think it was $80 before). You’re probably going to get 10+ thing though. Keep in mind that sushi isn’t part of this, so if you want the full experience, go with the actual omakase ($MP – probably around $120-150 usually). Shunji-san knows what’s best that night, and is also very creative and flexible based on the patron. The menu is seasonal, but Shunji-san changes parts of his menu on a daily basis. For this dinner, we were served a few of the Shunji “classics,” accompanied by other seasonal and new dishes. The shirako “tofu” in particular was AMAZING. For the few of you who care, note the grade change…
